Medicare Annual Enrollment: Why Yearly Due Diligence Matters

Stephen Crawford |

The annual enrollment period for Medicare health plans is just a few short weeks away, running from October 15 through December 7. Whether you’re on Original Medicare with a supplement or a Medicare Advantage plan, this is the one time each year you can review and adjust your coverage.

And here’s the part many people overlook: regardless of which plan you have, annual due diligence is essential.

If You’re on Original Medicare + Supplement + Part D

For people with Original Medicare and a Medigap (supplement) policy, the most important piece to review each year is your Part D prescription drug plan.

Why? Because Part D is provided by private insurers, and coverage details change annually. Your prescriptions may have changed, or another insurer might now offer better pricing. When evaluating plans, look at:

  • Monthly premiums
  • Deductibles
  • Copays for your specific medications

A small adjustment could save you hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars over the course of a year.

If You’re on a Medicare Advantage Plan

Many Medicare Advantage (MA) plans also include prescription drug coverage, often called MAPDs (Medicare Advantage with Prescription Drug coverage).

These plans are essentially one-year contracts with private insurers. Each year, insurance companies compete for new beneficiaries by changing benefits, adding incentives, or lowering costs. That’s why it’s critical to shop around—even if you’re happy with your current plan.

When reviewing your options, consider:

  • Coverage and provider networks
  • Prescription drug benefits
  • Additional benefits like dental, vision, or fitness programs
  • Out-of-pocket costs

It’s not just about staying covered—it’s about ensuring you’re covered well and cost-effectively.

Why It’s Worth the Effort

Doing this annual due diligence ensures you’re not overpaying and that your coverage still aligns with your needs. Plans change, your health may change, and new options become available.

At Clarity Wealth, we guide our clients through this process so they can feel confident they’ve got the right plan at the right cost. If you’re not currently working with our team, reach out—we’d be happy to walk you through your options.

The bottom line: don’t set your Medicare plan on autopilot. A quick review during annual enrollment could save you money and give you better coverage for the year ahead.
